Lyttelton ferry
Sir, — The ferry issue should .be viewed in its proper perspective and not used as a political football by Mrs Hercus and her Labour Party supporters. In the past this service was grossly under-patronised by both passenger and freight users. Little has happened since the termination of the Lyttelton ferry service to suggest that such would not be the case at present. The one exception that is significant, is a fall off in freight both ways, between the two -islands. This would greatly reduce the prospect of a viable Lyttelton ferry service at present. Air fares and freight rates have increased recently but. this is a poor argument for a resumption of the Lyttelton ferry service, as other transport means'will undoubtedly suffer increased costs relative to air travel also. — Yours, etc., ,
R. H. G. BURNETT. August 7, 1980.
