Cyanide lures may have killed kiwis
Wellington reporter
Suppliers of certain flavoured cyanide lures have withdrawn them voluntarily from the market because of the possibility that they could be attracting kiwis as well as opossums. The Agricultural Chemicals Board said that field observations suggested that extracts of rose, Wintergreen, raspberry, and banana were responsible for the deaths of at least some kiwis.
A„ firm link has not yet been established and the board has asked for more research work to be done.
Hunters could help avoid killing-kiwis by placing baits above ground level—in trees, on rocks, among tree roots and logs, the board said. The use of small baits, above the size of a pea, would also reduce the contact of kiwis with them.
