Canty retains cup
Canterbury retained the Stevenson Cup when it drew, nine games all, with Otago in an annual billiards and snooker match in Dunedin at the week-end.
Canterbury looked set for victory when it led 9-7 going into the last two games. However, in close finishes the two top Canterbury players, Eric Simons and Dave Meredith, were both beaten. Simons lost his billiards game to Lance Napper, 478457, with Napper scoring 21 points on his last visit to the table. Meredith was beaten three frames to two
by George Kennedy at snooker, the game being decided on the black in the final frame. With both teams below full strength the standard was not as high as in previous years, although there was 'no shortage of close finishes, particularly at snooker. None of the Canterbury players had a perfect record through the three rounds. The snooker trio of Meredith, Claude McQubide and Des Buckley, did best with two wins apiece. Paul Golding was the only billiards player to match this record.
