County cricket
The English county cricket championship seems certain to go to the south of England. In the round just concluded, Middlesex maintained its place at the top of the table with an innings win against Essex, taking it to 183 points from 15 games.
Surrey is easily the nearest challenger, 21 points behind Middlesex but having played two matches more. It also had an ■innings win, at the expense of Northamptonshire. 7. - The other side with a slim chance is Nottinghamshire, for which Richard Hadlee finally returned. He had six for 63 in the match against Leicestershire. Results:—

Knight 4/9, R. Jackman 4/39) and 282 (G. Sharp 87, L. Yardley 62, R. Williams 52) by an innings and 31 runs. Surrey 19 points, Northamptonshire 2. Sussex 299/9 declared (G. Mendis 85, J. Barclay 54) and 93/3 declared beat Lancashire 158 (J. Simmons 58) and 136 (G. Arnold 5/29) by 98 runs. Sussex 19 points, Lancashire 5.
Nottinghamshire 271 (R. Robinson 138, M. Harris 52; P. Clift 5/43) and 80/1 (D. Randall 44 not out) beat Leicestershire 179 (N. Briers 94) and 170 by nine wickets. Notts 19 points, Leicestershire 5. Derbyshire 147 (C. Old 6/44) and 314/8 declared (J. Walters 72, R. Taylor 75, G. Miller 61, H. Tunniclifite 56 not out) drew with Yorkshire 223 (G. Stevenson 111). Yorkshire 6 points, Derby 4. Middlesex 422/7 declared (G. Barlow 100 not out, R. Butcher 83, P. Downton 67) beat Essex 128 (N. Philip 51; M. Selvey 5/42) and 290 (K. McEwan 70) by an innings and 4 runs. Middlesex 20 points, Essex 2. Glamorgan 266 (H. Moseley 70 not out, E. W. Jones 55, N. Featherstone 51; S. Jarvis 6/100) and 242/7 (D. Francis 78 not out, A. Jones 71; G. Johnson 5/98) beat Kent 301/7 declared (C. Tavare 87, Jognson 84) and 206/6 declared (Tavare 100 not out) by three wickets. Glamorgan 18 points, Kent 8.
