Truckers shelve blockade
i PA Auckland [ Rebel transport firms say [ they have shelved their ! plans to blockade Parliament, for the meantime. Members of the transport action group, Progress, who are fighting to reform the road-user tax, were to lay final plans yesterday for next week’s convoy from Kaitaia to Wellington. However, the president of Progress, Mr E. Monkley, said the members would make one last attempt to reform the tax by negotiating with the Government. They would meet on Tuesday to discuss new proposals to change the distance tax to one based on fuel and registration.
On Thursday these would be referred to the Road Transport Association, which would refer them to the Government.
