Canty wins contests at Ashburton

Canterbury began the junior representative soccer season in impressive fashion by winning the under-11 and under-12 region six tournaments at Ashburton last i week-end. The under-11 team scored 23 goals and conceded none in its three matches. Stephen O’Connor scored seven times, Chris Stewart scored five and the other main contributors were Stephen Mooney (three), Craig Walesby, Kelly Tonkin and Alun Evans (two each). Against Mid-Canterbury, Canterbury faced a determined team and it was not until Tonkin opened the scoring with a perfectlyplaced lob that Canterbury was able to take, control, eventually winning, 8-0. It

was Canterbury’s best per-] formance. The Canterbury’ under-]2 team beat Canterbury Country, 4-0, beat Mid-Canter-hiiry, 6-0, and beat South Canterbury, 2-0. Kent Mannis scored all four goals against Canterbury Country while Sean Owens, at centre back, managed to score three times.

Shane Hoani, at left wing, had a good tournament, showing a good turn of speed, and Pierre Flavell was a dominant goal-keeper. The Ashburton association is the envy of many larger junior bodies. It has its own headquarters at Argyle Park, which includes seven fullsize pitches. A team from- Mid and South Canterbury was selected at the conclusion of

■!the tournament. It will be known as Aorangi and it is : hoped to play a match • against the Canterbury • under-12 national tournai ment side next month. Timothy Maguire will not; forget July 19, 1980, for’ some time. Playing for i Nomads eighth grade teams i against Hornby at Hagley Oval, he scored four times

to help his side to a 6-0 win. Troy Dunnage and Andrew Marshall were the other goal-scorers. Chris Pender and David Kettley scored for Kaiapoi in its eighth grade game against St Albans-Shirley. However, any thoughts they had of victory were quickly dispelled by Jon Birtles and Lance Farrant, who equalised for S.A.S., to give it a 2-2 draw.
