'Disturbing trend’ in spending

The North Canterbury Hospital Board will uj. vestigate a “disturbing trend” of overspendingwhich in the first three months of the current financial year amounts to more than $570,000. Most of the overspending is on salaries in a total or $20.15 million spent in tha last three months.

The board’s treasurer (Mt R. L. Harrison) told the fin* ance committee of the board yesterday that while the overspending was only about .5 per cent of total spending, the trend towards overspending was “a major headache.”

Mr R. I. Parker, the board’s chief executive, said that urgent steps must be taken by the board to contain overspending. “This trend is very worrying and there is a need to investigate its causes and seek to contain it,” he said. 4 5 The committee decided that as overspending was likely to be a continuing problem, the special budgetary sub-committee should meet regularly to review costs and report to the board.
