Topple attempt fails

The president of the University of Canterbury Students’ Association, Mr A. J. Stuart, easily survived a vote of no-confidence at a special meeting on campus yesterday.

Mr Stuart said last evening that his position had been reaffirmed by a convincing majority.

About 150 students attended the special meeting — making it the biggest for some time, according to Mr Stuart.

A petition calling for the vote had been presented to the executive of the Student’s Association by a group of 75 students.

Under the association’s constitution, the 75 signatures made the meeting obligatory. The student magazine, “Canta,” had consistently opposed Mr Stuart during the year. Its editor, Mr P- McCombie, alleged before the special meeting that Mr Stuart and his executive had “not done the work they should have.”
