Firm Australian market

An influx of overseas cash ahead of a report on Strata Oil’s gas search in Western Australia helped underpin firmer trading on the Australian sharemarket yesterday. Strata rose 50c to 315 c in anticipation of good news to back rumours of a major find at the Woodada No. 2 well but an announcement that the well had not yet reached target depth saw the shares ease to 285 c for a 20c gain. Strata affiliate, Haoma, ended 30c higher at 410 c and another. associate, North-West .Mining,' added 10c to 350 c.

Gold stocks were weaker after a fall, on the New York market overnight, and Central Norseman set the tone for the big miners with’ a 40c drop to $10.50.

Most heavyweight miners held the line despite weaker base metal prices: M.I.M. was steady at 460 c, Western Mining gained 4c to 408 c and C.R.A. was unchanged at 530 c. Woodside firmed 12c to 312 c in a stronger oil sectbr. *.

'.lndustrial stocks were paced by B.H.P.’s 15c gain to $14.80, but C.S.R., drifted 10c lower to 710 c. T.N.T. firmed 3c to 245 c, 1.C.1. eased 2c to 250 c, the A.N.Z. lost 3c to 492 c, and the Bank of New South Wales gained one cent'to 290 c. News that Mining Houses of Australia had encountered significant Shale oil traces on the * Nagoorin deposit pushed the stock 30c higher to 145 c but trading was generally cautious among the rest of the shale'oils.
