She beamed her acknowledgement to a tumultuous welcome as the carriage drove briskly from Buckingham Palace along the Mall, through Trafalgar Square, and along the Strand and Fleet Street to a special thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral. Next to the Queen Mother, who was rosy-cheeked and dressed gaily in a lilac outfit’ and ostrichrfeather hat, ■ sat her grandsone, Prince Charles,’ but she had; time /only for the crowds.
