Opera given aid

The Minister for the Arts (Mr Highet) has approved an extra grant of $lOO,OOO to the National Opera of New Zealand, to . meet the National Opera’s expected total deficit for the present financial year.
“By settling the deficit, I am giving the National Opera the chance to con-
tinue with a clean slate and prove itself a viable, continuing enterprise,” Mr Highet said. The grant was made from lottery proceeds. Mr Highet will ask' the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council to give him a comprehensive report on all aspects of the opera, including future funding, at the end of the year.
