No decision on S.A. boycott

PA Wellington Wellington Harbour Board employees unanimously agreed yesterday to defer indefinitely any decision on a boycott of South African goods. About 400 unionists attended a meeting to discuss the call from the Harbour Board Employees’ Union national executive to implement the ban discussed at the Federation of Labour conference in May. A union spokesman said after the meeting that the Wellington branch wanted more information before it made any decision on a boycott. The principal reserva-

tion was because of the uncertainty of whether other transport unions would follow. The union’s national secretary, Mr R. Gerdelan, at present in Miami at an International Transport Workers’ Federation meeting, successfully moved at the May F.O.L. conference that all affiliates should consider a way to promote a boycott of South African goods. The “boycott South Africa” resolution and a proposed meeting of transport unions to discuss it will be discussed by the F.O.L.’s national council in Wellington on Thursday.
