U.S. men must register
Young American men living in New Zealand will be required to register with the Selective Service System, a plan announced by President Carter to “improve the manpower readiness of the United States.”
Any male United States citizen born in 1960 and 1961, who is resident in New Zealand from July 21 to August 3, was required by law to register at the United States Embassy in Wellington or at the United States Consulate Office in Auckland, said the American Consul (Mr D. R. Tremblay). Failure to register could result in a $lO,OOO fine or five years imprisonment. Mr Tremblay emphasised that this was only a call for registration, and was not a return to the draft.
“Only Congress has the authority to call for a draft, and: the President has no plans at this time to ask Congress for that authority,” he said.
