Cave still gushes water
If searchers had waited for West Coast flooding to subside, three Christchurch youths would probably still be trapped in Profanity Cave, near Berlins.
An underground torrent was still gushing from the mouth of the 4km-long cavern yesterday afternoon, according to the licensee of the nearby Berlins Hotel, Mr Alan Dockery. “No-one would have a hope of getting in there,” said Mr Dockery. Last Wednesday, a 20knot flow of water prevented would-be rescuers from entering the . cave mouth to reach the three trapped youths, Gregory Huston, lan Kevern, and Steven Holyoake. The youths had been trapped in the cave for 65 hours when they were rescued early on Friday morning by experienced cavers who had tunnelled their way into Profanity through an entrance which had been blocked in the Inangahua earthquake of 1968.
