Jefferd another Lincoln ‘old boy’

By JOHN BROOKS The new All Black centre, Andy Jefferd, adds to the growing list of players who gained rugby prominence while studying at Lincoln College. Jefferd was an agricultural student for three years from 1974, and played 34 matches for Canterbury A, chiefly at centre, in 1975-76-77. In the last season he linked up with Alex Wyllie’s Glenmark side. Jefferd then returned to the family property at Tokomaru Bay, and was welcomed with open arms by the struggling East Coast rugby team. He is now in his third season with the side, and is the first All Black from the union for 50 years. The first, and only other one was George Nepia, who was playing for East Coast when he was in the 1929 and 1930 New Zealand teams.

Although of spare build, “Jack” Jefferd is noted as a crash tackler and a sharp attacker. In his first year in the Lincoln College team he played in midfield with the All Black lan Hurst, who helped significantly in his development.
