Meat bill move fails

PA Wellington Opposition moves to have the Meat Amendment Bill (No. 2) referred back to a select committee for further consideration of the meat industry delicensing clauses, failed yesterday. The move, initiated by Labour’s shadow Minister of Agriculture, Sir Basil Arthur, was lost on a division yesterday morning. Labour opposed the clauses, saying they would lead to increased killing charges and would ■ inflame i freezing

works’ industrial relations. Submissions to the select committee had, in the main, opposed delicensing of the industry, Sir Basil had said. However, the chairman of the Lands and Agriculture Select Committee, Mr L. C. Schultz (Nat., Hauraki), reporting the bill back to Parliament, said the legislation would give “a new lease of life to the industry.” The committee’s report was tabled and the bill was set down for a second reading.'
