Drilling rig to go back to Taranaki

PA » Wellington A Petrocorp " subsidiary, Petroleum Corporation of New Zealand (Exploration) Ltd, yesterday reported a disappointing result from its Kokiri No. 1 well on the West Coast and said the drilling rig would be moved back to Taranaki for a second McKee well.

Petrocorp’s general. manager (Mr R. J. Hogg) said that Kokiri No. 1 was drilled to 3232 metres on Wednesday.

The absence of certain strata in the Kokiri test downgrade the area as a hydrocarbon prospect, he said. This was a disappointing result, particularly., for the South .Island . . . but it did not mean the end of exploration in the South Island. “The information gained from the well will be of considerable value in further assessing the West Coast basin as a whole,” Mr Hogg •said.
