Shirley wins soccer
Shirley primary school won a Christchurch primary schools’ seven-a-side soccer tournament when it beat Christ the King, 1-0, in the final at Hagley Park. Zone winners were found, then divided into two sections. Teams then played oni a round robin system to find the finalists. Shirley won section one, comprising Lyttelton, Riccarton, Redwood, Sumner,' with seven points, while Christ the King won section two with eight points. The other teams in its section were North New Brighton, Aorangi, Rowley, Lincoln and St James. The winning Shirley team was Alec Bennett, Mathew Grainer (who scored the goal in the final), Nigel Hale, Andrew Grainger, Simon Howarth, lan McMurdo and Howard Metaxas.
