Lyttelton ferry

Sir, — How can Mrs Hercus. member of Parliament for Lyttelton, possibly accuse the Minister of Transport of deliberately setting the freight, passenger, and car rates at a level which bears no relation to costs and creating a fictitious cost for watersiders. On what basis does she make her claim? Thereie is no evidence of a deliberate intent by the Minister, only an “assumption” by Mrs Hercus based on her own unqualified statements. I notice Mrs Hercus avoided commenting on the reality that the Minister’s figures were based on the ferry’s sailing, full of cars, passengers, and freight each time. Anyone with any business sense knows this is not possible. If the freight charges and fares had been set any higher, there would have been a howl from the Labour Party and support for the service would have dropped to probably 50 per cent loadings, causing yearly deficits of $500,000 with only weekly sailings. —

Yours, etc., C. G. MARSHALL. July 11, 1980.
