Lower drinking age
Sir, — If Margaret Ferner (“The Press,” July 10, page 6) is not opposed to lowering the drinking age to 18 years, as long as it is properly policed, perhaps she can offer an effective means by which this can be carried out. At present, young girls wearing phoney rings, aided and abetted by their boyfriends, can drink anywhere. What can parents, barmen, or police do about this? In
future, if the drinking age is lowered, more and more young people will be frequenting hotel bars, and possibly there will be more and more road accidents accordingly. — Yours, etc.,
M. I. MAWSON July 10, 1980.
