The Budget
Sir, — Arthur May has his economic facts mixed up. Previous stimulations of the economy were designed, as was this Budget, to hold the line as well as possible, in a time of world-wide economic uncertainty. No amount of belly-aching will relieve us from our vulnerability in a cold, hard world. Mr Chapman has never suggested anything about “unheard-of miracles” but did suggest that it was an economic miracle that our economy had been saved from collapse after three years of an inept Labour Government. Even Mr Roger Douglas has now divorced himself from Labour’s financial policies at the expense of being relegated to the back benches. Arthur May would do better by extolling the virtues of hard work and thrift at this time. — Yours, etc., J. F. GARVEY, Westport. July 7, 1980.
