Teaching of Maori ‘in own hands’

Zealand’s formal education structure cannot cope with teaching everyday conversational Maori language, the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Couch) has told a group of Maori elders in Wellington. The responsibility for teaching the language, he said, would lie with the Maori community and programmes such as Whanau Wananga. “The present school system is doing quite a good job, but if we are talking about everyday conversational Maori, it won’t be able to cope with this, at least in the short term,’’ Mr Couch said. “If we want the Maori language' to flourish, the remedy is in our own hands, ” he said.
