P.E.N. writing awards
Wellington
The winners of the P.E.N. Best First Book Awards for 1979 have been announced in Wellington.
Stephen Higginson won the poetry section for “Coward’s Country,” and the prose section was won by Peter Hooper with “A Song in the Forest.” The Prose judge, lan Wedde, described “A Song in the Forest” as being “complete and detailed in its creation ... . it is coherent, original, and absolute.” The Poetry judge, Alistair Paterson, said that “Coward’s Country” was an allegory’ “which explores the national conscience and rehearses in a public mode the values and preconceptions of New Zealand’s present political and cultural climate.” Each winner will receive a prize of $6OO.
