Approved technicians to carry out A.I. work
Approved technicians will be allowed to carry out artificial insemination at trotting studs in the coming breeding season. This was decided by the executive of the Trotting Conference after It had received a report from its veterinary consultant, Professor C. H. G. Irvine, of Lincoln College.
| The scheme has the apiproval of the New Zealand Veterinary Association.
Technicians, expected to ibe studmasters or their ’staff, will have to attend a five-day residential course at Lincoln College, probably in i August. If they attain a satisfactory level on theoretical and practical aspects of artii ficiai insemination, partici- : pants in the course will be I granted approval to carry I out this form of breeding at (specific studs.
It was not intended thai approved operators would bt able to work on an itinerant basis, said a spokesman foi the conference. “They wil be able to operate only a the studs named on theii certificates,’’ he said. Veterinary surgeons wil' be used by some studs tc carry out artificial insemination and. of course they would, as usual, b< called in tvhen breeding problems arise, he said, ad ding that the scheme hat the full approval of the Vet erinary Association. Professor Irvine is to pre pare a schedule of minimun requirements for equipmen and premises at studs when artificial insemination is being used. These minimum standard: will be incorporated in regulations which will b( presented for confirmatioi at the 1981 annual meetin; lof the ■ conference, afte i which they will come int<
i force or. August 1 of that vear.
It is expected that the regulations will be modelled on those at present operating in Victoria. These would require studs using artificial insemination to be registered by the conference.
