Belmont Stakes to outsider
NZPA New York Temperence Hill, a 50 to 1 shot ridder by Eddie Maple, came charging down the straight on Saturday to win the 112th Belmont Stakes, the third ;. f the major American’ classics.. .-The-victory. by the. outsider, stunned the crowd of 58,090,wh0 had; virtually ignored, the. bay colt in the totalisator betting. Genuine Risk, which five weeks ago became only the second filly in history to win the Kentucky Derby, held on stubbornly in the last two furlongs before relinquishing the lead to Temperence Hill.
Rockhill Native, the beaten ..favourite in the Derby, finished third, a further one and a half lengths behind. Temperence Hill, a Ken-tucky-bred son of Stop the Music and Sister Shannon, earned a purse of $156,835 for his iwner, Mr John Anthony. The victory by Temperence Hill meant that three horses shared the American Triple Crown for three-year-olds., After Genuine Risk won the Derby at Churchill Downs, Codex took the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico in Baltimore. . The ; Belmont, K in contrast to the Preakness two weeks ago, was-a cleanly run race.
