NAFTA furniture agreement

PA Wellington Australian and New Zealand furniture rhanufacturers have signed a new agreement under schedule B of NAFTA which will allow New Zealand to export duty free twice as much across the Tasman as Australians will be permitted to sell in New Zealand, the executive officer of the New Zealand Furniture Manufacturers’ Federation (Mr Perry Kerr) announced.

Mr Kerr was part of a fiveman delegation which went to Sydney recently to finalise details of the new agreement.

Under the agreement, New Zealand furniture manufac-

turers will be permitted to sell $5.7 million worth of furniture components to Australia in the year ended June' 30, 1981. Australian manufacturers are allowed to sell $3.9 million worth of furniture and components to New Zealand.

Mr Kerr said in a supplied statement that the increase of $1 million each way was for furniture components only, which would be used by manufacturers in both countries.

He said that there was special provision in the new agreement for metal components and furniture to the value of $165,000.
