Volleyball tourney to Le Coq Sportif
In a spectacular closely-fought game Le Coq Sportif (Auckland) ousted the impressive University side. 3-1. in the final of the D.B. University invitation volleyball tournament
Sportif. a team with great experience and power played a very controlled game and was consistently able to turn defence into attack.
Sportif’s' performance was no doubt uplifted by the skill of the captain, Stuart Ferries, and that of Peter Conroy, whose consistently good setting’ enabled his team to attack forcefully. University, while having to put most of its effort into defence, was still able to score freely from the fast attack of Gilbert Enoka, Mark Bray and the consistent good work of Paul Bell. University perhaps needed to concentrate more and their com’bination attack was not working well enough to deal sufficiently with the power aiid force of Sportif. The final-was a cut and thrust affair. neither team really
dominating the other or giving any quarter. It was a deserving win and a promising start for Le Coq Sportif which had been preparing for two months, and who left directly for a twoweek tour of Australia. University on the other hand has just begun preparation with a view to the 1980 national championships to be held in Auckland in early September. In the semi-final Le Coq Sportif easily dispatched Smash. 3-0, and University romped through Rongotai, 3-0. Smash and Rongotai played off for third and fourth places, Smash coming out on top, 3-2. The greater strength and experience of D.B. University, mainly through the attacking abilities of Sandy Fawcett, ably supported by Julie HeronMcßean, enabled it to win the final from Rongotai, 3-0. Third place went to Le Coq Sportif and fourth to Smash, a pleasing result for the local team which finished above its ranking.
