Three teams lead senior women

Three teams are locked in the lead of the senior women’s hockey competition after Carlton downed the previously unbeaten Cranmer on Saturday. Woolston beat Harewood to join Carlton and Cranmer in the lead, and Burnside found form to end its losing streak with a win against Linwood United.

Results.—Woolston 3. Harewood 1 Burnside 5, Linwood United 1; Carlton 2, Cranmer 1.

Burnside was too strong for Linwood United and held a territorial advantage throughout. Within minutes of the start, Jane Earnshaw had scored the first goal, racing in to pick up the rebound after the goalkeeper had stopped a hard shot bv Judv Phillips.

Linwood rallied, and with some good passing and teamwork attacked strongly. After a succession of penalty corners. Sue Spivey, the centre forward, picked up a loose ball and scored. However. Burnside was soon back in Linwood ground and after a melee in the goalmouth Julia Allen scored.

Burnside’s halves were quick to stop any breakaways, and their forwards always combined well. Jackie Kane, the right wing, scored after a good pass from Allan.

The second half was a repeat of the first, although Linwood played with more purpose and Burnside found it harder to penetrate the defence. The only field goal came from a good solo effort by Kane, who drew the goalie, and with a reverse stick neatly placed the ball in the empty goal. As time was running out, Burnside was awarded its second penalty stroke. This time Phillips made no mistake. Woolston v. Harewood This match was played on a relatively dry and well groomed ground at Cottesmore. Play was fast and even, with Woolston slowly gaining the advantage. Play moved swiftly from end to end with both teams putting the ball over the goal rathei than in it. A good run by Kay Stevens, the left wing, resulted ; n her scoring the first goal foi Woolston. The Harewood forwards were verv quick to any loose ball and made many good breaks. From a good run, Marie Flannery, the right wing, centred for Debbie Saunders to score, even though she had slipped and was sitting on the ground.

In a see-sawing second half. Alison Sutherland and Saunders almost scored but were foiled bv infringements. Play remained mainly in midfield until Julie Reid picked up a quickly taken free hit from Lois McCartney and netted with a good angler! shot. Play was stopped temporarilv while two small dogs were removed from the field. Thev could not have been Harewood does, because later Woolston attacked dowp the right flank and Sue Duggan, the

right wing, was well placed to finish off with a goal. Chris McCauley, Woolston’s New Zealand representative, did not play through injury, but was on hand with encouraging support. For Harewood. Penny Carnaby defended determinedly, as did Elaine Jenson, the goal-keeper. Woolston’s Leah Macdonald and the replacement full-back. ■Janice Provan, played well. Carlton v. Cranmer In a game that started with a promise of excitement which proved unfulfilled. Carlton beat Cranmer by two goals to one. This was Cramner’s first loss in the competition. Carlton started vigorously. Shirlev Haig received the ball from the bully and with some quick passing Lorraine Langan soon had the ball in the net. The score was soon to be tivo goals to Carlton when, after a good run on the right wing, Jill Searle centred the ball to find

the stick of the centre forward. Marv Shand, who placed the ball in the back of the net.

.Cranmer was not dismayed and kept pressure on Carlton. Cranmer nearly scored when Nicki Sherriff. playing at centre forward, scooped the ball over the net. Cranmer moved quicker to the ball and made many interceptions, keeping Carlton in its own half. June Miller, playing constructively, had Cranmer back in the game when, after a good run down the right, was in position to push the ball past the goalie. Leslie Shankland, into the net. Plav deteriorated in the second half, with both teams giving away possession and making many simple mistakes. Phillipa Ashton, at right half for Cranmer. kept the score down when she saved a certain goal off the goal-line. Play continued to be very scrappy and it wa s not until the last few minutes that Carlton combined better and forced

Cranmer into errors. But the whistle sounded before the penalty corner could be taken.
