Lead consolidated in Tress’ contest

On a day in which three senior players were ordered off, University B again set a good example in rugby behaviour to consolidate its lead in “The Press” best and fairest competition. University B gained the top points for the day, its score of 19 being only one off the maximum, and it now holds a seven-point lead from University A and Marist. Old Boys, previously second equal, dropped off the pace a little and now lies fourth, one point ahead of

the “The Press” Centennial Cup holder, Lincoln College. Not surprisingly, the three teams which each lost a player through misconduct were the lowest scorers of the day, and Suburbs, with the extremely poor total of nine points, dropped to the bottom of the table. Total points are:— University B 176, University A and Marist 169, Old Boys 166, Lincoln College 165, New Brighton 159, Belfast and Christchurch 155, Merivale-Papanui 151, Albion 150, Hornby and Linwood

148, Sydenham and Bumside 144, Shirley 143, Suburbs 138. Points awarded on Saturday were:— University B, sportsmanship 11, constructiveness 8, total 19; Marist, 11, 7, 18; Lincoln College, 11,7, 18; Christchurch, 11, 7, 18; University A, 11, 7, 18; Burnside, 11, 6, 17; Hornby, 11, 6, 17; New Brighton, 10, 7, 17; Merivale-Papanui, 11, 5, 16; Belfast, 10, 5, 15; Old Boys, 10, 5, 15; Albion, 10, 5, 15; Sydenham 10, 5, 16; Shirley, 7,7, 14; Linwood, 5, 7, 12; Suburbs, 5,4, 9.
