Argentinian policy

Sir, — The Christchurch Group . of Amnesty International views with grave concern the human rights situation in Argentina. In view .'of President Videla’s current visit to this country it seems appropriate that New Zealanders should be aware of the type of government he represents. In recent years of military rule Argentina has shown a complete disregard for most basic human rights. Six thousand people have disappeared. Legislation passed on August 22, 1979, announced that anyone who has disappeared since November 4, 1974, may be considered officially dead, so no investigation of their fate is possible. Bodies washed ashore along Argentina’s coast have confirmed reports of large numbers of political detainees being, pushed from aircraft into the sea. Torture is common in political prisons and thousands of prisoners are held without charge or trial. The abduction of children of real or imagined dissidents is also common. — Yours, etc., A. M. and C. E. BROADBENT. Honorary secretaries, Amnestry International, Christchurch. June 7, 1980.
