Old soldiers too old
PA Wellington Because of age, New Zealand’s oldest former soldiers, members of the South African War Veterans’ Association, will withdraw their membership of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association. Seventy-eight years after the South African War ended. Captain J. R. Middleton and Mr F. B. Mitchell will withdraw
their membership on June 30. Captain Middleton, who will be 100 on October 10, served in the Royal Navy during the war and Mr Mitchell, aged 98, of Kaitaia, served with the Imperial Yeomanry, Territorial force. New Zealand sent 6513 soldiers of all ranks and 6662 horses to the war. Both Captain Middleton and Mr Mitchell will receive a $35 grant after their withdrawal.
