Capping march resumes
About 500 students in Christchurch yesterday took part in the graduation procession.
Traffic officers halted traffic and spectators crowded over street-corner vantage points as the students and staff edged their way towards the Town Hall and the capping ceremony. No procession was held last year. The procession yesterday was led by students representing the faculties of science, engineering, law and forestry, then followed the dignatories and staff members. The colours of the students’ hoods, especially the dark blue of the science graduates and the violet of the engineers, dominated the scene. .
Bringing up the rear was the official party. Last of all. walked the Chancellor. (Miss J. M. Herbison) and the Vice-Chancellor (Mr A. D. Brownlie) both in maroon gowns embroidered in gold. In 1981, students of the faculties of arts, commerce, music, and fine arts and the recipients of diplomas and certificates will form the body of the parade. The two broad sections march on alternate years.
The capping ceremony marked the end of two days of formal conferment of degrees, diplomas, and certificates on more than .900 students. Those who did not wish to receive their degrees in such style will be capped “in absentia” at the next university council meeting.
