Two escape boat blast
PA Auckland Two Titirangi divers yesterday survived an explosion on their boat at Destruction Gully, and then swam 40 metres to the shore.
Their five-metre fibreglass boat was burnt to the waterline.
On returning to the boat from a dive at the gully, near Whatipu, they failed to notice a petrol leak from the motor, and the fumes exploded when they tried to start it.
The blast was seen by people on the northern shore, but the divers, aged 28 and 23, unscathed, had reached shore by the time the coast guard rescue boat arrived.
