Athos one of best trialists
The successful Riccarton' jockey, Philip Smith, has good prospects of improving his winning tallj’ at the Am-' berley meeting tomorrow. He has been engaged for Firpo in the Canterbury Cup and his two-year-old mount will be Athos, one of the most impressive trialists on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. Athos beat Damazan and O’Cally’s Nip by four lengths from the 800 m in 48.55. It was planned to gallop Firpo 1200 m, but he was in business at the 1600 m and ran in from the 800 m in 51.25, and from the 600 m in 38.65.
