Male abortion counsellor

Sir, — C. M. Summers (May 6) has stated all the “facts” but reached an unusual conclusion. Yes, it is a man who is at least equally responsible for an unwanted pregnancy, and yes, it is the predominantly male medical profession who legally control the choice of terminating an unwanted pregnancy. But it is the woman who is pregnant. She has to endure blame from our patriarchal society for not being willing to give birth to an unwanted child. She must also undergo “examination” by an entire bureaucracy of (usually) male doctors who will make this vital decision about her future. Now, in addition, she may receive counselling from another man. Despite the best training and the best intentions a male counsellor is one more unnecessary man “helping” a woman with a problem no male could ever face. — Yours, etc., (Ms) H. R. EGGLESTON. May 6, 1980.
