Free enterprise
Sir, — Apologists of communism and socialism have no argument when they say that the crumbling condition of this nation is due to the application of private enterprise. We have never had genuine private enterprise in New Zealand. This country began on a socialistic footing, caused mostly by the centralised monopoly of finance. That this country has prospered to the present is due entirely to those energetic individuals who fought against the centralistic claim to “all power.” To them goes the credit of the genuine development of New Zealand. Today the State takes more than half the gross national product hitting hardest with its enormous taxes and restrictive laws those few remaining genuine private enterprises. The result is a reversing of the earlier growth in prosperity, lowering of morale and increasing public unrest. It is the contradiction of contradictions when socialists now cry out “try our wav.” — Yours, etc., W. H. DALY, Timaru. May 6, 1980. -
