Pope’s food call
Pope John Paul II has called on Africans to produce more food, saying that agricultural products were more important than some luxury items. He was addressing a crowd in Kisangani, in northern Zaire, after arriving from Brazzaville. “Your country must satisfy its food needs — agricultural products are more important than certain luxury products,” he said. The Pope was apparently referring to concern felt by United Nations food agencies in Rome that Zaire and many other African countries have become net importers of food. — Kisangan i.
