Store cattle values firm

Values for store cattle have remained firm in spite of several setbacks suffered in the last two months by the prime beef market. This trend continued at Addington yesterday. Adult store steers improved overall by up to $2O; cows sold solidly — especially those bought by breeders — and calves showed a general improvement. The adult store cattle yarding of 573 (123 last week) had a very consistent following and most lines were easy to sell. A feature of this market were the well-presented lines of Herefords from high country stations. The market for these was extremely strong. Previously the demand for store cows has come from fatteners, but the demand yesterday for cows came mainly from breeders; this was taken by vendors as a sign of confidence for the [future of beef cattle. I The best of the steer and heifer calves sold at similar rates to last week. There [was a marked improvement in the values for lighter calves. In recent weeks there Shave been numerous sales below $lOO. but yesterday the $lOO mark was the lowest paid for calves. These lighter lines probably improved by $l5 to $2O. The yarding was 2023 (579 last week).

A feature of the calf sale was the Simmental cross steers and heifers from J. C. Montgomery (Cheviot). His steers made to $254 and heifers to $l6B — easily topping the market.
