Ministry drops out
The Wheat Research Committee was not very pleased when it learnt that the Ministry of Agriculture did not intend to continue its membership of the committee, one oi whose important functions is to recommend to the Director-General of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research the release of new wheat varieties. Mr P. L. Thaine, who represents the Ministry on the committee, was not present at the meeting. A farmer representative on the committee. Mr A. L. Muholland, said he was appalled that this should happen.
The chairman of the committee (Professor R, H. M. Langer) said it was raher strange that the Minsiter of Science should set up a committee from which the Minister of Agriculture removed a member. The committee will ask the Ministry to reconsider its decision, which it is believed has been taken because the Ministry feels that it is over-committed in its membership of seedindustry organisations. The chairman said, that matters had arisen at the meeting that would have been of concern to Mr Thaine.
