Pianoforte concerto
Sixteen young pianists have entered for the second Greeba and Thora Lewin junior pianoforte concerto award this year. The preliminaries will be held in the State Trinity Centre on Sunday afternoon. May 11. The contest, for pianists aged up to 18. is held as part of the Christchurch Competitions Festival- and has a $2OO first prize and a $lOO second prize. The donor of the award, Miss Thora Lewin, died during.. the last year, and so the contest is now a memorial to her and her sister. Mr Bryan Sayer, of the staff of the Auckland Uni-
versity Conservatorium of Music, is the judge. He will select four finalists who will present their works with the Christchurch Youth Orchestra under the direction of Peter Zwartz, on Sunday, May 18. The test works for this year are the first movement of ' Mozart’s Piano Concerto jn D major, K 175; the first movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor; .. and the first and second movements for Concertino for Piano and Strings by I David Farquhar. Con- ; testants will play one of ! the works of their choice.
