Compromise on tip?
A compromise on the controversial Bexley tip rub-bish-dumping proposals will probably be accepted by the Christchurch City Council. Residents of the suburb may want the council to go even further, and get rid of the 'earth mounds already built next to Pages Road to screen dumping that might never be done again in that area, Y - . According to the com-! promise, there would be no further tipping north of the present Dyers Road end of the Bexley site without “detailed discussion’’ with the residents. • This assurance was recommended yesterday by the works and traffic committee, which' said that tipping could continue in the south for two or three more years. In the meantime, the earth mounds would be landscaped and kept tidy until more detailed plans were worked out for the ultimate use of that end of the tip. It will be used for some recreational or community purpose. Land where the mounds now are has been subdivided, and is in a residential zone. Sections could some day be sold by the council along Pages Road. Cr Vicki Buck said the
mounds should be pushed back from the road as soon as possible. They could pose r o a d-flooding problems where they are, since water would drain from them. A report on future use of the land will be prepared within the next six months. Cr Noala Massey said she did not expect the big land area to be landscaped or planned immediately, but the
mounds were too high. Cr R. A. Bamford said it would be irresponsible to move the mounds until the council knew what land use residents wanted south of them. If the mounds were taken away soon, it would be most economic to take the material to the south end of the tip and use it for rubbish cover there, said the City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular).
