Ratana leader retracts
PA Hamilton A' Ratana Church leader yesterday retracted comments he made on Tuesday indicating that the church had issued a subtle directive to members to vote for Mr Matiu Rata in the Northern Maori, by-election. Mr R. Smith, an elder of Te Omeka- marae and a member of the church’s presidency council, said he was the anonymous church source who had said that Mr Rata was the church’s kind of politician. But if anything he had said had indicated that the church favoured any particular candidate, he regretted that. “There was no way that was ever suggested,” said Mr Smith. He had called Mr Rata and other Maori pohticans to withdraw his earlier statements. The church at all times had played a lowkey role politically and did not wish to become publicly involved in the by-election.
