Burnside topples Old. Boys in infer-club squash
A fighting losing performance bv Chris Wasley over the Canterburv representative, Lawrence Sku'rr, on Tuesday evening enabled Burnside to topple the men's division one squash leaders. High School Old Boys. Burnside took six points from the contest with Wasley’s two games in the final rubber giving his team a 9-8 advantage. Thus, Christchurch I. with its clear defeat of Linwood, has taken a two-point lead in the Blank Trophy.. Wasley’s match lasted well over an hour and was marked bv a number of long rallies. The Burnside player, dominating from ,the front court, actually led Slcurr two games to one but lost the-.next two after a tight tussle. .<
> The women's competition was - notable for the fact that three • of the four contests had to be ; decided on games countbacks • with Sumner <9-B>, Burnside (7-6) i and Linwood (8-7) narrow winners. l In Sumner's match against i Suburbs the fit Kate Carpinter ; was in great form, allowing her , opposite No. 1. Chris Winter- ■ bourn, only eight points.' For i Christchurch 11. Agnes Huriwai ; had a most creditable four-game win over Saskia O'Brien but the I game taken by Mrs O’Brien was I enough to give Burnside victory. .(Joan Terrell's defeat of Jacqui ; James and Kathy Pepper's I drawn-out match with Danae : Goosman helped Linwood to ; sneak home in its clash with University. High School Old Boys increased their lead with a convincing wifi over Christchurch, which wajs without its top player, Philippa Lush. Lorna Symes, who beat Bette King in straight games, was the only winner for Christchurch I though Erin Hensley would have been quite pleased in taking Lorraine Sutherland <a very tough proposition at No. 2;; to four, games.
