Essex Hospital closing
Sir, — Your, health reporter has drawn, attention to the effects of the closing of Essex Hospital. Local obstetricians and general practitioners have argued that the North Canterbury Hospital Board will push maternity patients towards private hospitals. Too few places will be available for prospective parents to have the obstetrician of their choice. Christchurch Women’s Hospital was among the last in the country to allow husbands at the birth. Again consumer rights are denied and many parents will leave for private hospitals. The poor, as always, have no choice and restricted rights, —Yours, etc., (Cr) D. J. ROWLANDS. May 1, 1980.
