Moving of old buildings

Sir, — The article in Reporter’s Diary (May 5) about the carving up of an 1866 historical colonial cottage in Woolston and its removal to Moncks Spur raises some interesting questions. Is this still classed ’as a historic building and therefore pro* tected? I find it distressing that these historically valuable buildings are moved at all, even just a few feet. The original siting, the elevation, the foliage, the old roses and, of course, the old trees that frame these old colonial homes are surely all lost to our history. I would say we are the only country in the world which would hump these buildings arcfund the, countryside and still hope to call them historic; Am I wrong? They always look all awkward to me, and wrong, no matter, where their eventual resting place is. — Yours, etc., NESSIE VIAL. Ashburton. May 5, 1980.
