Soviet moves in Afghanistan

Sir, —One wonders how M. Creel (May 5) can so grossly misrepresent the facts of the European situation and still believe what he writes. The belief that the Soviets have never shown “a jot or tittle of evidence of any such aggression” against Western Europe is absurd. The 21,000 tanks positioned by the Warsaw Pact countries are not there for defence. The tank, especially in such numbers, is an offensive weapon, built to spearhead the advance of an invading army, just as it did in Afghanistan. As to the comparison between United States, British and French troops in West Germany and the Soviet troops in Afghanistan, one can only ask: where are the attacking helicopters killing people fighting to survive in their own country? Where has the puppet government been set up? Where is the massacre of schoolchildren taking place? It is in Afghanistan, and the responsible force is an aggressive, imperialistic Soviet Army.—Yours, etc., R. W. B. MORRISON. May 5, 1980.
