Bull values boosted
Strong support from Australian and North Island dairy farmers boosted values at this year’s round of pedigree Friesian sales in the South Island. In spite of some record sales, the average prices paid were similar to last year’s. Because some of the stock offered were of indifferent quality, lacking tvpe and pedigree, the over-all average did not improve. Visiting buyers lent strong support to the sales and 30 head of cattle will go to Australia and many more to the North Island. The usual group of local buyers, who have played a large part in the success of previous., sales, was reduced this year. The Deloraine stud at Timaru had a recordbreaking sale. It broke the New ' Zealand record price for a Friesian bull when one sold for $18,500 to an Australian buyer. Another sold at $lB,OOO and this also will be shipped to Australia. The Deloraine bulls averaged $5020 and the heifers $2075. The top heifer price, $4BOO. equalled the New Zealand record.
Over-all, the Deloraine Friesians averaged 83Uo<. The Glenlea stud, near Rangiora, sold a esc in a bull for $B2OO. The stud’s bulls averaged $3538 and heifers $899.
