Container handling too expensive?

The New Zealand Ports Authority has begun a study of container handling costs in New Zealand, after assertions that, it costs twice as much to unpack a container here than in Britain. At the recent Harbours’ Association conference in Wellington, the director of Overseas Containers, Ltd (Mr A. J. Bott), said that it cost $529 to unpack an L.C.L. iless than container load) container in New Zealand on the waterfront using waterfront labour. He said that the comparable cost in Australia was $358. .while in Britain it was only $217. He blamed the higher cost here on overmanning. . Many of New Zealand's container facilities — three cranes each at Auckland and Wellington, two at Port Chalmers, and one at Lyttelton—were built-in anticipation of increased British and European trade which had not come about, nor would it, said Mr Bott. At the same conference, the Prime Minister iMr Muldoon) said that New Zealand had spent about Sl3O million on port container facilities and the Government wanted to be sure that the investment was used fully.
