International licences still advisable
Although some countries now officially recognise the regular-issue New Zealand driver’s licence, prudent travellers planning extensive trips carry International Permits. The Automobile Association in New Zealand has, since 1958, been the sole source for the issuing of permits and the demand has been steadily increasing. Last year, for instance, AA Canterbury issued 8154 permits, 2600 more than in 1978.
International permits are valid for one year (unless the applicant’s domestic licence is suspended or revoked during that period). If the holder of a permit is still touring overseas when it expires and he requires another, the formalities associated with the first issue have to be repeated in full. A new permit can then be issued. The cost of an International Permit is $2.
