Union expels slaughterman
PA Invercargill The Ocean Beach slaughterman who last week applied to the District Court of Invercargill for an order for two fellow meat workers to keep the peace has been expelled from the Meat Workers’ Union.
Mr Brian Clancy, aged 31, claimed he had been intimidated by fellow meat workers ; after he refused to contribute to the union’s ■ Kinleith strike support : fund, and he applied to the Court for an order requiring two fellow unionists to enter into a bond to keep the peace, under section 168 of the Summary Proceedings Act. The executive of the
Otago-Southland branch of the Meat Workers’ Union expelled Mr Clancy from the organisation for allegedly divulging its affairs in contravention of the union’s rules.
Mr Clancy, whose applications to the court were adjourned to April 28, has 14 days to appeal against the expulsion.
He left the Ocean Beach works on April 12, because he alleged he feared for his safety for refusing to pay into the strike fund. He has not returned to work since.
The expulsion from the union means that Mr Clancy will not be able to continue as a meat worker.
